Day Thirty seven We've decided to escape the mayhem for a few days at the seaside :-) So we'll see how things look on Wednesday!!
Day Thirty nine (Wednesday) Came back to a nice surprise, with progress being better than we hoped! Yesterday the plasterer skimmed the extension, and plyboard was laid on the floor ready for tiling. The shower room is all put back together, with the lovely showerscreen, basin and toilet all plumbed in. The tiler has finished the floor in the extension, though its hard to see what it'll be like because its still covered in grout. The upstairs bathroom has also changed, with the old yellow bathroom suite gone, the new bath fitted and the ceiling lowered, spot lights added and skimmed! Wow, what a difference!!
Day Forty Lots of visible progress again today. Tiling has started on the upstairs bathroom and most of the splashback in the kitchen is done (it still needs grouting). Our tiler Kenny hopes to get finished tomorrow so fingers crossed! The other big thing is that the kitchen worktops have been fitted and they look fab! Really pleased with them, and with Paul for suggesting the end returns on them. Also got an outside tap and the new sink is all plumbed in. Craig and me had to paint bits of the walls so the radiators can go back up - 'gallery white' or so they say...
Day Forty-one The upstairs bathroom is now fully tiled, but apparently the sanstone coloured grout was a nightmare - and it looks like it will take a lot of cleaning off over the weekend! The kitchen is coming on too with the final touches being put to the splashback and tile skirting. The appliances are plumbed in and ready to go which is great!
Weekend No builders on site this weekend, but lots of work for us! We've sanded the ceilings in the extension and both bathrooms. Properly cleaned the shower room (looks great), have managed to get the living room and bedroom back into some kind of order too! The tiles in the upstairs bathroom were a nightmare, we had to clean them 5 times to get the grout off and then had to seal them because they're ceramic. Phew glad that's over! Also managed to get another coat of oil on the worktops to try and protect them.

Week Six
Unfortunately no progress over the weekend. The forecast was for heavy rain so the roughcaster never came - and of course that meant we had two lovely dry days! Ho-hum. However, we did manage to go tile shopping, and have chosen the kitchen splashback, shower room walls and floors.
Day thirty(Monday 18th August) Lots of the plasterboard is now up, and you can really see the shape of the rooms properly now. Access through the old kitchen (new shower room) is now blocked off which really changes the room.
Day thirty-one Went and ordered the kitchen so that will hopefully arrive soon - they think around Thursday. Piping into the shower room now done. Lights fitted in the extension - they look fab!
Day thirty-two The shower room stuff is now in place (but not attached to wall as it still needs tiled) so we can see the basin, toilet and shower tray in situe. The lights have been fitted in here now too, so its really coming on. Had a tiler come round to quote so hopefully the shower room will be complete by early next week! yipeee!
Day thirty-three Final plasterboarding and lighting fitted in the shower room. The kitchen arrived too - wow what a lot of boxes! One wall out of three have also been roughcasted so hopefully that'll be finished tomorrow (forecast is for nice weather, but we'll wait and see!).
Day thirty-four Unbelievable difference today! Tilers have been and made great progress on the shower room so it should be ready for the sanitary ware and shower to be properly fixed on Monday. Roughcasting is complete at last, which is great. The base units have also been fitted in the kitchen so can really see it coming together...

Week Five
Day Twenty five (Monday 11th August). Despite it being our wedding anniversary (6 years!) yesterday, we had to pack up the remainder of the kitchen. A new skip arrived first thing and the kitchen is now in it! They've also broken through from the dining room so we have direct access to the extension, and they are connecting up the water supply so the rest of the kitchen can be removed without us giving up our cuppas.
Day Twenty six Temporary sink and washing machine have been set up in the extension, and the frame for the bathroom stud wall has been fitted. The brickie was here too and has finished (I think) all the blockwork, so just needs roughcasted now.
Day Twenty seven All go today - the central heating fitter was here all day and has almost finished fitting the new boiler, has taken away the old hot water tank and all the old radiators, and fixed two new ones to the walls in the front living room and hallway. Some start made on plasterboarding the extension, and the shower enclosure was delivered.
Day Twenty eight All the radiators are fixed to walls now, and some are even connected! The column ones in the extension are my fav although quite like the dinky towel rail in the shower room too. The cupboard in the second bedroom has been removed and more plasterboarding has gone up in the extension. Another coat of varnish on the folding doors by me and my mum!
Day Twenty nine The roughcasting has started - they'll hopefully finish over the weekend if not too wet. And the central heating is fitted so we can start getting upstairs (well our bedroom and the office) back to normal - and be warm!! Getting there!!

Week Four
Day Eighteen (Saturday). More progress on the roof - it's almost finished but unfortunately the tiles were easily broken and so we need to order a few extra (50) to replace the ones broken during fitting (you can see gap left in this pic). New design ideas for the kitchen, so visited a couple of kitchen places to hear their thoughts.
Day Nineteen (Sunday). Internal phone wires needed fixing, so our friend Tony came to help with that, plus to feed out the speaker wires to the new extension.
Day Twenty (4th August) Finishing touches put to the roof - it's looking good! Underfloor insultation fitted ready for the flooring to be put on top. Oh and the third wall has been sealed up and insulated so the blockwork can hopefully start outside it.
Day Twenty-one An early start for Craig - he went to order the bathroom before work, so we now have the WC and basin here, but the shower enclosure is on order, hopefully to arrive next week. A start was made on running the electrics out to the extension, and the kitchen window has been fitted.
Day Twenty-two The tri-fold doors arrived, and (much to the horror of the builder) the frame has to be assembled (from about a gazillion bits). More electrics were put in for lights etc, some plumbing work was done to let us hook up the sink next week, and the floor has been laid. Also took delivery of the central heating system, the radiators weigh tons!
Day Twenty-three Work started on the nightmare doors :-) Following the horrendous instructions, it took our two builders a whole day to build and fit the frame, then hang the three doors. Whew! Me and my mum were then left with the fun job of varnishing them which took almost as long! Still, they look luverly - see photos of them closed, part open and fully open.
Day Twenty-four - the old kitchen window has come out and the new frosted one has been fitted for the shower room. We also went to collect the new column radiators for the extension plus a heated towel rail for the shower room. Getting there, but pleased to be escaping the mayhem for a weekend at the seaside!

Week Three
Day Thirteen (Monday) The roof joists have all been fitted today, and it has been partly clad in the chipboard stuff that has also clad the walls.
Day Fourteen More woodworking on the roof (batons and things) and you can now see exactly where the roof windows will be. The first one has been fitted, and we spent the afternoon visiting shops with our builder. Have made final decisions on the type of kitchen (shiny black gloss with oak worktops), heating system and radiators.
Day FifteenSecond velux has been fitted and the waterproof coating has been put on the roof. Went to the bathroom store after work and have made a decision on the shower, toilet and basin for the shower room.

Week Two
As promised there was work over the weekend. On Saturday (day 6) the drainage pipes were finished (see photos 1 and 2 ) and all the materials were moved up the driveway to the back garden.
Sunday (day 7) was the start of the blockwork, and by the end of the day, it was up to floor height, ready to be filled and the framework started (see photos 1 , 2 and 3).
Day Eight. Today is Glasgow's Fair Monday, a local holiday which is traditionally taken by the building trade, so no new activity. However, we did go shopping and found a fab shower for the new shower room. It looks a lot like this but we've managed to find a similar one at a much lower price which is just about within budget.
Day Nine More materials have arrived, mainly wood for the frame. The guys spend most of the day filling up the base. It needs to be inspected by Building Control again tomorrow, and then concrete can be poured on top of this base and the frame can start to be put up.
Day Ten Polythene stuff has been laid (guess it's the damp proofing?) and Building Control came and passed it again. The concrete has arrived and been poured so the frame is next!
Day Eleven Lots of hammering and drilling today, and the frame for the floor is complete! It's great because I can now stand on it and get a feel for what I'll be looking out on. It seems really high!!
Day Twelve The wall frames are all up, and the doors and windows can now be ordered. Glad to say the builders aren't working this weekend (long lie for us!) but we will be demolishing the old potting shed behind the garage to put in the skip so not too much of a relaxing weekend ahead!

Week One
Well it has started!
Day one of our build (Monday 14th July) saw the old rear porch extension (see photo of old porch) being demolished and a whole skip full of debris going! We were away most of the day (having been at T in the park all weekend) so not too bad for us! See photos 1, 2 and 3 at the end of day one.
Day two was pretty noisy, with another skip being filled by a digger. We now have some nice trenches for the foundations (see these photos -1, 2, 3), and tomorrow they're hoping to get the drainage dug out.
Day three - another skip another day. More digging, drilling and getting great big lumps of concrete out of the ground. Doesn't look an awful lot different, but it's definitely moving on.
Day four - our first big delivery of 'stuff' arrived - blockwork, cement, sand, etc. And the lovely people from building control managed to make it out today (didn't think they'd be here until tomorrow) and they've passed the foundation dig :-)
Day five - after fitting steel mesh reinforcement for the foundations, the concrete arrived and the foundations were poured by 11am! Hope the weather doesn't get much wetter.
The weekend - No rest for the wicked! To make the most of the (mainly - this is Scotland!!) dry weather, the team are pushing on. So the brickwork is starting over the weekend and I'll add pictures to next week's post.
